Navaratri Festival: A Royal Promise Honoured

Lekshmi Mohan

Navaratri

Every nook and cranny of the East Fort area in Thiruvananthapuram was filled with thousands of people dressed in traditional attire; come to witness the procession of the deities of Saraswati Devi, Munnootti Nanga (Goddess Shakti) and Kumaraswamy (Lord Subramanian) — an age old custom that has been as part of the region’s Navaratri festival celebration for centuries.

The procession marked the commencement of the festival and I was fortunate to see a bit of it while going back home from work. The Saraswati idol is believed to be the one worshipped by the Tamil poet Kambar, who gifted it afterwards to a Chera King. The King in turn promised to honour and worship the Goddess at the Navaratri festival. And since then the tradition has been carried out faithfully by his descendants. Continue reading

A Day Out in Madavoorpara

Lekshmi Mohan

Madavoorpara

A couple of months ago my friends and I decided to take off on a weekend trip away from the usual tourist spots in the city. That’s how we ended up going to Madavoorpara.

Located 17 km to the north of Thiruvanathapuram city, Madavoorpara, is beginning to attract a fair few travellers. The place is famous for its 1,300-year-old rock cut cave temple of Lord Shiva on a hilltop 1,800 feet above sea level. Continue reading
